Kamalii Elementary School kindergartners from Annie Queirolo’s class add fresh vegetable toppings to a pizza during Tuesday morning’s Harvest Festival. The school is one of a dozen on the island to have garden programs supported by the organization Grow Some Good. “Our roots are sustainability,” said Grow Some Good Executive Director Kathy Becklin, while her crew helped kids squeeze lemons and sugar cane for juice. “We want to teach the children to value the aina, to know where their food comes from and to improve their nutrition.” To ease worries about rat lungworm disease, Becklin said this year’s harvest festivals are not using food grown in the gardens, but produce purchased in stores. The harvest from the gardens is being given away.
